If you’ve ever been in the position of having to find a job fast, you know the pressure involved in trying to balance your need for speedy employment with the need to find a sane workplace. Many times you just have to guess that you’ll be able to handle whatever comes up during the workday. However, that can leave you in precarious circumstances where you could be taken advantage of by the company. One way to avoid this is to sign with reputable temporary staffing agencies. The managers at these agencies serve as a defensive line should your work conditions take a nosedive.

Contract Enforcers

If you’re working on a temporary assignment and are asked to do something that is outside the scope of the assignment — say you’re ordered to pick up lunch for everyone in the office, when you’re supposed to be doing data entry — you can have the temp agency intervene if you feel the request is out of line. If you like your co-workers and are fine with picking up a few salads for a few people, you certainly can, of course, even if the job description doesn’t require you to.

There’s another advantage to signing with a temp agency. If you take permanent jobs that end up being bad, that can lead to you into a period of job-hopping that doesn’t look good on a resume. With temping, though, you’re employed by the temp agency. Your temp manager might pull you out of the abusive job and place you in another, but your resume would just read that you had steady employment with the temp agency.
